The Science Behind CleanSmart.

All CleanSmart products are made with Hypochlorous, a substance the
human body produces to kill germs, protect, and heal itself. All mammals
make it, and have for 40 million years. Since it is endogenous, it causes
no harm, neither tissue damage nor skin irritation.

Hypochlorous Fast Facts:

  • HOCL is the scientific formula name.
  • Full name is Hypochlorous Acid, it is a weak acid like orange juice, but with Hypochlorous it’s considered nature’s germ killer.
  • Hypochlorous is naturally produced in the white blood cells of all mammals.
  • The white blood cells make it as needed to kill pathogens, including viruses, bacteria and fungus.
  • Hypochlorous has been used in the medical field for years, and has many studies supporting its results across numerous treatment and therapies.
  • Hypochlorous chemistry is used in many ways: for eye infections, to kill germs in neo-natal hospital wards with preemie babies, for eczema, to cleanse Stage IV diabetic ulcer, and to kill bacteria on produce in grocery stores through produce misters.
  • Hypochlorous chemistry is approved for use by both large governing bodies: the EPA for surface disinfecting and the FDA for use on skin and food/produce. In Europe it’s approved through the EU Biocide and CE Mark.
  • Hypochlorous is even used to extend the life of fresh flowers, to eliminate germs on fresh eggs and even used to help rice plants grow faster.

Hypochlorous is Nature’s Perfect Germ Killer

All CleanSmart products are made with Hypochlorous, a substance the human body produces to kill germs, protect, and heal itself. All mammals make it, and have for 40 million years.

The diagram to the left shows the way Hypochlorous is produced in the human body and how it kills pathogens.

  1. Pathogens invade the body by entering the skin through a wound site.
  2. Neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) come to the invaders and surround one.
  3. After surrounding, the neutrophil produces Hypochlorous Acid to kill it.
CleanSmart products work by following the same modality.

Hypochlorous Scent and Questions About Bleach:

  • Hypochlorous has a unique faint smell that is undetectable to some users, while some equate it to a spa or the ocean, while some confuse it with a faint bleach smell.
  • Hypochlorous (HOCL) is not bleach. Laundry bleach is actually Sodium Hypochlorite (naCIO).

More Comparisons and Facts to Know:

  • Natural: “Bleach” (Sodium Hypochlorite) is a man-made chemical never found in nature; Hypochlorous is naturally in all mammals’ immune systems.
  • Safety: “Bleach” as a germ-killing disinfectant is legally required to have multiple warnings and safety hazard precautions on their labels. Hypochlorous germ-killing disinfectants are exempt from warnings and first aid labels.
  • Fumes: “Bleach” fumes are dangerous causing irritation and serious damage to respiratory systems and eyes. Hypochlorous has zero dangers with respiratory systems or eyes.

CleanSmart Achievements in Hypochlorous

The scientists at CleanSmart learned how to replicate Hypochlorous, and how to stabilize it in a bottle. Learn more about why CleanSmart & Hypochlorous are so special.

  • Ingredients are water and a little salt, which are then run through a special electrolyzing (also called ionizing) process.
  • It has been widely known for many years how to make Hypochlorous. However, it was not shelf stable. Our scientists worked for many years to achieve & perfect shelf stability so that it can remain in a bottle.
  • Hypochlorous is naturally unstable: it wants to ‘do its job’ and then revert back to saline. Once used or dried, Hypochlorous reverts to saline water, leaving no chemical residue.
  • Our product is pH neutral, another scientific achievement from CleanSmart.
  • CleanSmart's Hypochlorous is the only antimicrobial where the exact same product is EPA approved to be a Hospital Grade Disinfectant and also FDA approved to treat wounds or burns. The same solution does both! That is really smart science as we like to say - with extensive scientific, testing and regulatory work.

How Can I Trust These Claims?

Disinfectant products are heavily regulated by the EPA, and all statements about the CleanSmart line have been tested by outside testing laboratories and approved by the EPA.
